The Louvre palace is divided into Old and New Louvre. The major reference points are pavilions connected by wings. Old Louvre consists of medieval and Renaissance pavilions and wings surrounding Cour Carrée . The New Louvre wings and pavilions are called as extending westward – Napoleon I extended the palace to the west by building the northern part, which was finished under Napoleon III also with the southern part, which together form the sides of the Cour Napoleon, in the middle of which is situated the famous glass pyramid, and of the Cour du Carrousel with the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel. For simplicity, the Old Louvre is designated as the Sully wing, the northern branch of the New Louvre as the Richelieu wing and the southern branch of the New Louvre as the Denon wing. To examine the old and new Louvre, you can see each red icon on the above Louvre Map.
